New Jersey Concussion Law

New Jersey's concussion bill was signed into law by Gov. Chris Christie on Dec. 7, 2010. The main provisions apply to school districts and nonpublic school interscholastic leagues, and should be in place by the start of the 2011-2012 school year:

  • immediate removal of any athlete suspected of having a concussion from practice/game

  • athletes cannot return to practice/game until evaluated by a physician or other licensed healthcare provider trained in the diagnosis and management of concussion and receives written medical authorization

  • parents and athletes are required to sign a concussion information sheet

  • annual concussion training for school physicians, all coaches, and continuing medical education requirements for athletic trainers

  • read full text of the law
