Massachusetts Concussion Law

Massachusetts' concussion law became effective July 19, 2010. The main provisions which apply to all public schools and any school subject to Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) rules are:

  • coaches, trainers, parents, parent volunteers, physicians/nurses involved with school activities, athletic directors, and marching band directors must participate in annual concussion training

  • removal of any athlete suspected of having a concussion from practice/game

  • athletes cannot return to practice/game until evaluated by a licensed physician, neuropsychologist, certified athletic trainer, or other health care provider and receive written medical authorization to do so

  • school districts must maintain compliance records

  • Public Health Advisory, sports-related concussions   updated guidance 10/22/10

  • read full text of the law

Massachusetts school resources

The Massachusetts Dept. of Violence and Injury Prevention is tasked with providing concussion education for coaches, parents, athletes, athletic directors, and physicians/nurses involved in school sports.
