How can I protect him from concussions?
by Dr. Michael Koester /
We all want to do whatever we can to protect our children from harm. While there is nothing we can do to completely eliminate the risk of concussion in football, there are steps we can take to minimize the risk of the injury happening and further steps to ensure that if a concussion does happen, it is managed properly. While there is much controversy and discussion regarding helmet brands and styles, mouthguards, neck exercises, and omega-3 fatty acids, there are 5 steps you can take prior to the season that are certain to help everyone on the team.
Make sure of the following:
1. Players should have a helmet that is properly fit by an experienced coach, athletic trainer or equipment manager.
2. The coaches should teach proper tackling techniques and not tolerate any players initiating contact with the helmet or facemask. Over 60% of all concussions that occured in high school football over the past 2 years were the result of helmet to helmet hits!!
3. The coaching staff MUST have completed a concussion education program offered through organizations such as the CDC and NFHS.
4. The school or organization has specific policies and procedures regarding concussion management.
5. Identify which local primary care providers have experience in concussion management OR locate a sports concussion specialist in the area.
