Risk of dementia

A recent study of over 300,000 veterans who had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) during the Vietnam War found an alarmingly high rate of demetia years later. A related study of over 900 former NFL players documented symptoms of dementia in 35% of the athletes, much higher than the 13% rate of Alzheimer's in the general population. Read more...

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)

A degenerative disease found in the majority of retired athletes who have donated their brains to research, CTE may be caused by repetitive brain trauma such as multiple concussions. To date, the cause and progression of this disease is unknown, and research continues at the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy (CSTE) in Boston, Massachusetts, and several other centers in the U.S., Canada and Australia.
