Concussions take a backseat as heat claims lives

https://

High school football players who have recently started practices in the searing heat are likely worried more about survival than concussions. Since Saturday, three high school football players and a Texas high school coach have died during or after practice, several officially declared to be heat-related.

Two of the players were from Georgia high schools, and one was a freshman from South Carolina.

All were participating in practices in extreme heat conditions, some record-setting.

According to WSAV.com,"Heat has been blamed for the death of one Georgia high school football player and may be the cause of another. The latest, Fitzgerald High School's DJ Searcy, died in Lake City, Florida, after practice at a football camp. He was found passed out in his cabin, and couldn't be revived."

On Saturday, 14-year-old Tyquan Brantley, a freshman at Lamar High School in Darington, South Carolina died after practicing in 101 degree heat. His father said he was told by doctors that heat played a role in his son's death. The official cause of death is scheduled to be released on Friday.

According to Rivals High, "TheOldCoach.com and a variety of Dallas-area media outlets, Plano (Texas) Prestonwood Christian School assistant football coach Wade McLain collapsed and died after his school's first football practice on Monday afternoon. While the cause of death remains unknown, it is believed that severe temperatures in the area played some role in McLain's passing; Monday was the 31st consecutive day where temperatures in the Dallas area soared past the 100-degree mark."
