Twins' Morneau Calls for Patience with Concussions |
March 13, 2011- Minnesota Twins' Justin Morneau, the team's top hitter before a concussion suffered this past July caused his unexpected hiatus from baseball for eight months, played his first game against top competition Friday without any apparent setbacks. "It all felt pretty normal," said Morneau, according to Yahoo Sports. While not back in the opening day lineup yet, Morneau's hopes his concussion experience can be a guide for youth athletes:
"When I got hurt, I didn't think I was going to be out that long; I didn't think it was going to be that bad," Morneau said.
"Hopefully kids see this and that I missed a significant amount of time and life goes on; that there’s things more important than sports," Morneau said. "Obviously, I love the game, I love to play, but you want to be able to function as a 40-year-old, a 50-year-old, a 60-year-old man. You want to be able to play with your kids."
Patience," Morneau said. "The best way to describe it is like being on an island. Nobody can really know what you're going through every day, what you're feeling every day. It's got its own timetable. It's not up to you."
Yahoo Sports reports that Morneau received encouragement from other professional athletes who had suffered their own concussions, reminding him that he could look forward to a full recovery.
