Sarah Rainey, "Sidelined from School..."

Sarah sustained a concussion playing soccer for her high school in April, 2010. Although she momentarily lost consciousness, she immediately returned to the match.  Luckily, Sarah did not sustain a second impact, however, her concussion was debilitating.  In addition to ending her soccer season, she was cognitively impaired for four months after the injury.

Sarah sought expert care at Children’s National Medical Center’s Safe Concussion Outcome, Recovery and Education (SCORE) Program.  Ultimately, a 504 plan was implemented to formalize the academic accommodations ordered by her doctor for the rest of the school year.  Fortunately, Sarah has made a complete recovery.

Sarah’s experience motivated her and her father, Scott, to become advocates for concussion education and management.  Their particular interest is in advocating for better management practices for the potential serious cognitive impairment affecting students in the classroom.

Sarah observed, “When I got my concussion, I realized that I was going to have to sit out some games.   What I had never considered before was a concussion’s impact on school.  Unlike other sports-related injuries, a concussion doesn’t just sideline you from sports; it sidelines you from school.  I never realized that it could actually hurt to think.”

Sarah Rainey, 14, testified before the House Committee on Education and Labor on May 20, 2010, as her father, Scott, looks on.  Sarah suffered a debilitating concussion that ended her soccer season and affected her schoolwork.

Sarah Testifies before a House Panel - New York Times

She and her father, Scott, have become strong advocates for concussion education.  Their advocacy efforts include:

  • ·         -Sarah testified before the House Committee on Education and Labor in support of the Protecting Student Athletes from Concussions Act.

  • ·         -Sarah was a speaker at a Congressional Briefing on Concussions sponsored by the American College of Sports Medicine and the NFL.

  • ·         -Sarah testified before the Virginia Board of Education and successfully argued for the Board to amendment its concussion guidelines to address the cognitive impacts in the classroom.

  • ·         -Sarah and Scott were the luncheon speakers for a National Forum on Youth Sport Concussion hosted by Children’s National Medical Center.

  • ·         -Scott serves as a member on the SCORE Advisory Committee.

  • ·         -Sarah is working with the CDC to add her story highlighting the cognitive impacts of concussions in the classroom.

  • ·         -Sarah and Scott have been asked to take a leadership role in the development of Virginia’s Model Concussion Policy for the state schools.
