The "Evolution" of NFL safety measures

The NFL's 60-second spot that aired during the third quarter of the Super Bowl introduced the league's new website that focuses on the game's evolution and safety measures that have been implemented over the years.

The ad, produced by the director of "Friday Night Lights," opened with a shot of a 1906 football team with few rules and no head protection.

What followed were leather helmets, polycarbonate shells and facemasks.  Minimal regulations were massaged by necessity into today's standards.

The NFL notes they've come a long way, and acknowledges there's much more to be done.

The narrator sums up the point of the campaign at the end of the ad, "Here's to making the next century safer..and more exciting than ever. Forever forward. Forever football."  The new website NFL/EVOLUTION puts things in perspective.

Timeline

The NFL Evolution website offers a historical look at the changes made in the game beginning with the debut of American football in 1869.  Some of the highlights are:

1894 - flying wedge banned

1905 - President Roosevelt steps in to save the game as public outcry mounts due to the number of severe injuries and deaths

1920's - birth of NFL, hardened leather helmet

1930's - draft debuts, facemask invented

1940's - hardened leather pads used

1950's - padded plastic helmet, fibershell pads, single bar facemask

1960's - world's first Super Bowl, astroturf

1970's - plastic helmet with full facemask, clipping and leveraging banned

1980's - clipping, chop block, unnecessary roughness rules

1990's - butting, spearing, ramming rules; radio helmets introduced

2000's - illegal hits expanded; roughing passer, snapper protection

2010's - helmet-to-helmet contact ruiles, protection of defenseless players, player safety research

2011 - NFL dedicates more than $100M over the next decade to medical research with the vast majority going to concussion-related research

The timeline on the Evolution website makes it very apparent that the game has changed through the years, primarily in response to safety concerns.  Further modifications to rules and equipment may need to be made in order to reduce the number of concussions each year.  The new NFL campaign makes it clear that any changes are a work in progress, and well, part of the evolution.
