Q: How Important are Helmets for skiers and snowboarders?

Dr. William Meehan:  There is some evidence that helmets may reduce the risk of concussion in these alpine sports. There is good medical evidence that wearing helmets while skiing or snowboarding will reduce the risk of head injuries.  A study involving over 20,000 skiers and snowboarders concluded that wearing helmets had a 15 percent decreased risk of sustaining a head injury after a fall or collision compared to skiers and snowboarders not wearing a helmet.  Please note, this study measured the risk of all head injuries, not specifically concussion.

Important note:  While today's helmets may not be effective in preventing concussion, they are highly effective at preventing catastrophic brain injury.  Therefore all athletes participating in high-risk activities should wear a new, undamaged, properly fitted helmet.1
